FLL tournaments - important deadline coming up
October 11, 2004
From: Jill Wilker

IMPORTANT DEADLINE :  Oct 15, 2004

To compete in 2004 FLL tournaments, you need to complete your team profile from the register4fll.com site.

Follow the "Options" prompt, select the "Apply for State/Provincial Tournament" and then the Tournament Application page which  brings you to a pulldown menu to select  "CA San Jose  1/8/2005"

This signals your intent to participate in a qualifying regional and if invited, to participate in the Northern California official tournament.  Registration fees are only collected after you are accepted to the NCaFLL tournament.

Questions, problems, just ask.

Thanks, Jill

Qualifying Regionals
October 8, 2004
From: Jill Wilker

Coaches -

Many of the tournament coordinators are getting multiple worried emails/phone calls about regionals....

As you may or may not know, we have been scrambling  to have qualifiers available for every team that wants to attend one.  Currently, if the tournaments that I have listed do indeed happen, we have enough space for everyone.

As of last night, we have a total of 162 teams registered with FLL that could be in the Northern  California area and potential regional tournament space for 164.

Currently, here are the qualifying (regionals) tournaments that I know of:

11/20  Los Altos (full)
11/20  Sacramento  (open)

12/4   SJUSD  (waiting list)

12/11  Fremont (waiting list)
12/11 (tentative date) El Sobrante

[no date yet] Milpitas

If El Sobrante allows 32 teams (as in the past) and Milpitas allows 10 teams, this gives us space for 164 teams.

========================================

I don't have confirmation yet, but I am assuming that the Palo Alto "momentum" was lost and there is _not_ going to be a small regional in that area.  If someone has different information, please respond.

Also, it is not clear yet if there will be a small regional in Sausalito. [I hope so, the Bay Area Discovery Museum is gorgeous.]

Many of you have sent in requests to every tournament that you can.  This makes it difficult for all tournament organizers.

The 162 NorCal FLL teams  includes a couple of teams that may opt to attend the Central California tournament (I don't have confirmation either way yet).

Also, I know that not all teams are planning on attending a regional ( I have confirmation of at least 6 teams).

So we have space at the regional level.

Cheers, Jill

Scrimmage coming [Nov 20th]
September 30, 2004
From: Jill Wilker

Playing At Learning has been coordinating with the Girl
Scout's Girls Go Tech! event to invite FLL teams (yes, even all-boy teams <grin>) an opportunity to scrimmage within a fun technology-oriented afternoon.

Details are still being worked on and will be posted here. But, mark  the afternoon of Saturday, November 20th on your calendar if you are interested.

Also, if you are near Oakland, we could use help in getting 2 challenge tables physically to the Marriott City Center on that date.  So, if you can help out, please send me email [jillwilker@yahoo.com].

Welcome - hosting a regional tournament?
September 20, 2004
From: Jill Wilker

Hi -

Welcome to the 2004 FLL season.

Team registration at FLL is now just over 3,100 teams registered in North America. The deadline is Sept 30th (or 4,500 teams whichever comes first).

If you are planning or even just thinking about hosting a regional tournament, please let me know as soon as possible.

I (and other tournament folks) will be sending updates to this list on a regular basis.

The official FLL regional tournament registration opens on Oct 1st for 2 weeks.  Some regional tournaments may have a different registration process.

There are now 3 state tournaments in California! Northern California, Southern California (at LegoLand) and new, this year, a Central Valley tournament (in Fresno). Details about the Northern California tournament will be posted here.

Cheers, Jill

NCaFLL Tournament Status & Steering Commitee Call
Friday, August 20, 2004
From: Mark Edelman

This is an open call to the Northern California FLL community (particularly tournament directors) to participate in a steering committee for organizing the NCaFLL Tournament.

We would like to propose a short face-to-face meeting either Sunday 9/12 at 5pm or Wednesday 9/15 7pm.  If you have a preference drop us a quick note. Otherwise, we will pick based on availability of meeting space.

We believe that most of the work/discussions can happen via email and won't require many (if any) additional meetings.

Current Status:

Playing @ Learning, a new non-profit, has agreed to coordinate the NCaFLL Tournament.  We formed with the purpose of supporting FLL and FLL-like activities in the Greater Bay Area. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and are in the process of soliciting support/sponsors for the tournament.  If you have contacts or leads for likely donors, please pass the information on to us.

We are in discussions with Ohlone Community College in Fremont about the possibility of having Ohlone host the tournament.

We have tentatively selected two weekends of January as the candidate dates for the NCaFLL tournament; January 8-9 or January 15-16.

Things we would like to accomplish through a steering committee
are:

We would like to see the various tournaments coordinate into a community.  The FLL participation in California is growing quickly, it would be great if we can work together towards supporting the kids.

We are hoping to leverage the strong experience that has been accumulated by many of you & use that to build a set of resources that can be used by current and future tournament organizers.

Thanks for your time & we look forward to working with each of you!
